Susan V. Piazza is a Professor of Literacy Studies and Chair of the Teaching, Learning, and Educational Studies department at Western Michigan University. She engages in critical and pragmatic research that serves communities of learners through anti-racist, equity-focused, and socioculturally sustaining pedagogies. Piazza has a history of advocacy and scholarly work on sociocultural and linguistic inequities that multilingual, multiracial, and diverse learners experience in schools and society. She has been an educator for 25+ years and taught in K-12, college, and university settings. Her participatory action research takes place within underserved communities and school districts. She received the Teacher Educator of the Year Award from Michigan’s Reading Association in 2016 and her research has been published in journals such as The Reading Teacher, International Journal of Multicultural Education, Journal of Teacher Education and Educators, Reading Writing Quarterly, and Language & Literacy.
