Dr. Shannon (Whalen) Gifford is the Director of the graduate programs in Health Promotion and Health Equity at Springfield College. She has been a full-time a Professor in the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Springfield College for the past 19 years, where where she helps prepare pre-service and in-service teachers. She has four degrees in health education from the University of Delaware, New York University, and Columbia University.
Prior to joining the faculty at Springfield College, she was a faculty member at Adelphi University, The College of Mount Saint Vincent and John Jay College, CUNY. She has worked as a health teacher in the Clarkstown Central School District and the Yonkers Public School System. She serves as a consultant for many private and public health organizations and has been an advocate for health education on state and national committees. She has presented at many conferences over the years and has been publishing her writing and research efforts in health education journals and textbooks. Her areas of expertise are teacher preparation, school health,, health equity, social justice education, trauma-informed teaching, social-emotional teaching and learning, and psychosocial health.
